What if the IOC’s role were different? What if, instead of sending its acolytes all over the world to demand our great cities prostrate themselves for a mere chance to spend millions on a bid which, if successful, will condemn it to billions of dollars of debt, displaced poor people, unhappy middle classes and relatively short-term economic benefit?
What if the famously capricious IOC instead used its billions of dollars of licensing revenue to convince cities to host the games? What if IOC members had to sell instead of buy? What if the IOC footed the enormous bill, or at least some of it? What if cities could demand transit upgrades, affordable housing, better airports and other investments in exchange for the inconvenience and disruption posed by the games?
What a very different proposition the whole thing becomes.
